Each day hundreds of people across the country are diagnosed with a disorder known as social anxiety. Social anxiety can appear in people of all ages and races at any point in time. Some consider anxiety at an early age to be a natural part of life, but those who experience symptoms of social anxiety later in life are often the victims of a tragic event. Symptoms of Social Anxiety
Those suffering from social anxiety usually begin to feel symptoms when they are in public. While some people crave attention, others become very upset when they feel as though they’re the center of attention. Their hearts begin to race, their hands and heads begin to sweat, and they want to find a place to hide. Muscle tension is yet another symptom of social anxiety. Those who find themselves in difficult situations react mentally but also tense their muscles. This includes tension in the vocal chords, which makes it difficult to speak as well. These symptoms, combined with a dry mouth and difficulty swallowing, are particularly unpleasant.
A few people suffering from social anxiety have reported sensations of nausea as a symptom as well. The average person may feel butterflies in his stomach before a presentation, but those with social anxiety feel much worse. They may also feel dizzy, clammy, and become very pale. Social anxiety may make your heart rate rise and, combined with the other symptoms, make a person feel incredibly ill.
Everyone suffering from social anxiety will have a different set of symptoms. Not all people suffer from the same level of anxiety. One person might have a headache and feel sick to his stomach while another may merely become tense. Those that feel uncomfortable in social situations may try to clench their bodies in a protective manner or find a way out of the situation. Either way, this isn’t a pleasant way to live life.
