How Does Adult Separation Anxiety Disorder Occur?
A person who is regularly separated from surrounds or people he is familiar with may begin to suffer from adult separation anxiety disorder. The stress from having to adapt to a new situation is overwhelming and eventually causes the sufferer to break down both physically and mentally. The stress associated with this disorder is unbearable and as the condition wears on the person suffering will attempt to make adjustments to avoid having an anxiety attack. He may eventually refuse to leave his familiar setting or may refuse to be alone. The sufferer eventually becomes a prisoner within his own mind.
There are several different stages leading up to adult separation anxiety disorder, each with a unique set of symptoms. At the early stage of development a person suffering from this disorder may only seem to be irritated or aggravated, but may try to mask his feelings. As time goes on and symptoms progress, he may begin to feel fearful in strange situations and might even begin to have physical symptoms such as nausea or a rapid heartbeat. If the situation gets out of control the sufferer will be unable to leave a particular set of surroundings or people without feeling intense anxiety. Patients who are over the age of 18 when experiencing these symptoms are usually diagnosed with adult separation anxiety disorder.
